Best in Basements: Flooring Edition

When you think finished basement does carpet come to mind?  Carpeting has been the popular option for this equity-building space for decades (hello looped berber carpet of the 90s). And we get it! Carpets are comfortable, warm, great for areas of lounging and playing—they are durable, versatile, come in a variety of colors, even patterns. And Yes! Still a great option.

But...there are other options.

Luxury Vinyl Planks

Luxury Vinyl Planks are essentially waterproof (great for our neck of the woods here in Chester County), extremely durable and resilient. Also easy to replace and fix in the hopeful case that your basement will be happily lived in. Often it mimics ceramic tile or hardwood and comes in a variety of colors…like it’s friend, the carpet.

Ceramic Tiles

Yes, tiles. These can cost a little more—but the designs and look are quite the show stopper. These are great to pair with LVP or carpet. The lead beautifully to an outdoor entrance, a basement bathroom or a bar. Tiles are durable, come in a variety of colors and styles, add that WOW factor, are a more eco-friendly option and essentially unaffected by moisture.

Engineered Hardwood

This option will give you the warmth, look and durability of real hardwood floors, but the added bonus of moisture resistance, like with laminate flooring.

There are pros and cons to everything. Same goes for flooring in your basement. Overall, look for an option that will protect you the most against moisture. We advise to fix any grading issues and make sure downspouts and gutters are in good condition and repair FIRST before investing in a new floor for your space.
